LEASES

AFFORDABLE HORSE EXPERIENCE WITHOUT OWNERSHIP

Ever thought about living out your equestrian dreams without having to saddle up on your own horse? Leasing a horse is the budget-friendly, responsible and flexible gateway to horse ownership without the full commitment.

Leasing a horse provides a similar experience to owning a horse while being much cheaper and having less of a time commitment.  Horse leases are great for people who hope to one day buy a horse, but don’t want to jump into ownership right away, or who just want a few extra rides on a beloved lesson horse.

Multiple horse discounts available!

What is Leasing?

Picture this: you get the best of both worlds, a chance to experience the joys of horse ownership without having to shoulder all the responsibilities (and costs) that come with owning a full-time equine companion. Leasing means you share the costs and responsibilities of caring for a horse with another party. Here at LUNA, we offer full and half leases!

Leasing a horse gives you the opportunity to have extra access to a particular horse. You can think of it as a test run before buying your own horse, or a cheaper alternative to horse ownership. For parents of horse crazy kids, it can be a way to encourage a child’s hobby without the major investment of buying.

When leasing, you are the “lessee,” and we are the “lessor.” A lease is meant to be a win for both of us! It allows you to have access to a horse you otherwise may not be able to have, and it also takes some pressure off of us. It also benefits the horse, since they will have a job to do, and get extra attention that we may not have the time to provide on their own.  The beauty of a half lease lies in its flexibility. Instead of being locked into a lifetime commitment, you can enjoy riding lessons, leisurely rides, or simply bonding with your horse during specified days of the week. For many young riders and urban enthusiasts, this option has emerged as an accessible alternative to full ownership, blending a passion for equestrian life with a realistic financial model.

There is a monthly fee, and you are NOT responsible for paying for costs like feed, stabling, vet care, farrier services or tack maintenance. We just have to make sure we are on the same page when it comes to horse care philosophies, riding schedules, and long-term goals for the animal’s well-being.

Benefits of Leasing:

There are two main upsides to leasing a horse. The first is the financial aspect. Horses are very expensive to own, so leasing is a more affordable option for many people. A lease allows you to pay a set fee for a set amount of time to have access to a certain horse. There may be other expenses involved depending on the type of lease you choose, but it will still be less than if you were paying for your own horse.

The second is from a responsibility standpoint. If you just want to be able to ride a horse more often without all of the extra responsibilities involved in their care, then a leased horse will be a better option for you. If you are hoping to buy your own horse one day, a lease will give you the chance to take on a little more responsibility until you feel ready to buy a horse of your own.

Leasing with LUNA

Leasing a horse does have many similarities to buying one. The main difference is that you do not have a long-term commitment when it comes to a lease. Our leases are month by month and are indefinite!

If you and the horse end up being a particularly bad match, you also have the option to go back and switch for a different one.

When you own a horse, the commitment is much longer. Owning a horse also means you get to make all of the decisions involving them and their care. If the horse you buy doesn’t work out, you can sell them. Finding the right buyer may not always be easy. Having a lot of decision-making power could be good or bad. It all depends on the amount of responsibility you are looking to have. We can help with both leases and sales/adoptions!

What type of lease is best for you?

We offer three different types of leases.

Half Leases

$100-400 monthly

For half/partial leases you would pay an agreed upon amount of money to have access to the horse with some restrictions involved. You will be limited to three days a week you can ride, and you will not have control over the horses' life or their daily care.

This option is popular with owners who still want to ride occasionally are looking for something cheaper since there is much less responsibility involved for the lessee. These leases are great for riders who are just starting to think about buying a horse of their own, but do not have a lot of previous experience. It will give you a chance to learn more about horse care and see if you are ready to take on more responsibility.

Full Leases

$200-600 monthly

A full lease is very similar to owning the horse yourself. They are more expensive since they allow you to have unrestricted access to the horse.

These types of leases are great for riders who are nearly ready for horse ownership or need a more affordable alternative to buying a horse.

Off-Site Leases

$300-900 monthly

An off-site lease is also very similar to owning the horse yourself. This type of lease allows you to board the horse at a location of your choosing and give you the responsibility of providing feed and veterinary care.

These types of leases are great for riders who are nearly ready for horse ownership or need a more affordable alternative to buying a horse.

Ground Leases

$50-200 monthly

A very affordable option for people who simply want to be around horses, with no interest in riding. With a ground lease, you can do anything you want with the horse excluding riding. Perfect for someone who wants to groom, bond and love on one of these beautiful creatures.
